MINSK, 31 December (BelTA) – U.S. tennis star Serena Williams was voted Best Female Athlete of the Year 2014 by the International Sports Press Association (AIPS). Belarusian biathlete, three-time champion of the Winter Olympics in Sochi Darya Domracheva came in second, BelTA has learned.
A panel of sports journalists from 91 countries voted in this year's poll. World No. 1 Serena Williams, the winner of seven titles, including the US Open and her fifth WTA Finals title in 2014, received 843 voted. Belarusian biathlete, three-time Olympic champion in Sochi Darya Domarcheva received 483 votes and Norwegian cross-country skier Marit Bjorgen 473.
The goalkeeper of the German national football team Manuel Neuer received 601 votes. Swiss tennis star Roger Federer got 537 and Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo 518.
Team Germany, the World Cup champions in Brazil, dominated The Best Team category with 1562 votes, 1073 ahead of the second-placed Real Madrid. The Spanish team were winners of the Champions League and the recently concluded Club World Cup and received 489 votes. Third place went to the men’s Swiss national tennis team, winners of the Davis Cup (310 votes).
According to the AIPS, the overall winner of the Best Press Facility Award was the FIFA World Cup in Brazil, having received 757 votes. Second place went to the press facilities of the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games (626 votes), while tennis classic Wimbledon came in third (438 votes).
According to the tradition, the AIPS conducts the poll to determine the best athletes and teams at the end of a year.
