Who Lives in Belarus book to be unveiled 6 September

MINSK, 4 September (BelTA) – The presentation of Who Lives in Belarus book will take place at the Yanka Kupala Central Scientific Library of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (NASB) at 16h00 on 6 September, BelTA learnt from the NASB press service.

The popular science edition has been prepared by the NASB Krapiva Institute of Art History, Ethnography and Folklore in cooperation with the Council of Ministers’ office for religions and ethnicities. The book provides full information on the social, material and intellectual culture of the nationalities living in Belarus.

The 800-page illustrated edition consists of two parts. The first part details the origin and cultural traditions of ethnicities. This part is made up of eight divisions dedicated to the history and culture of Belarusians, Russians, Ukrainians, Poles, the Tatars, Jews, the Romany, Lithuanians and other ethnic groups (the Afghans, the Vietnamese, the Koreans, the Germans, the Japanese) in Belarus. The second part provides an overview of the denominations that have gained the ground in Belarus.

The book contains photography from the personal files of the authors, illustrations from the national museums and libraries, and cartographic documents. The edition caters for historians, ethnographers, anthropologists, folklorists, theologians and ordinary readers.

Partaking in the presentation will be representatives of the NASB Presidium, the NASB department for human sciences and arts, the office for religions and ethnicities, the Culture Ministry, the Center of National Cultures, national and cultural associations and folklore groups.

The Ethnic Mosaic of Belarus exhibition will be held as part of the launch event and display over 150 documents of the 18th-21st centuries about the history and development of a tolerant commonwealth of representatives of different nationalities, manuscript books, Torah scroll fragments of the 18th century, and documents of the Tatars of Belarus dating back to the 18th-19th centuries.
