MINSK, 10 August (BelTA) – After dropping their first two games Belarus finally stepped up to beat Brazil 65-63 on 9 August for their first win in the Women’s Olympic Basketball Tournament in Rio, BelTA has learned.
At the start it looked like Brazil was going to win as the hosts raced out to a 28-16 advantage to end the first quarter. Brazil further made it a 38-20 game with 6:57 left in the first half, leaving Belarus dragging 18 points. Belarus did not panic though and were within 40-35 by halftime thanks to Tatyana Troina's efforts.
After the break the Belarusians took a lead several times, but the third quarter ended in a tie, 50-50. Yelena Levchenko, Lindsey Harding and Tatyana Troina scored so much needed points in the last quarter to get Belarus into the Group A win column. Tatyana Troina finished with a team-high 18 points.
Group A is currently topped by Australia that earlier beat France 89-71.
