Gustik wins gold at World Cup aerials

MINSK, 4 February (BelTA) – Belarus’ freestyler Maksim Gustik took the gold medal at the fifth stage of the Visa FIS Freestyle World Cup in Deer Valley, U.S., on 2 February, BelTA has learnt.

Coming tenth out of 12 sportsmen in the first qualifying stage with 112.72 points, Maksim Gustik finished in 5th in the second stage scoring 112.30 points. The third stage saw him topping the list of eight competitors with astonishing 120.80 points. The result let the Belarusian become one the four freestylers to reach superfinals where he again was the first with 117.85 points. Canada's Travis Gerrits (115.83) took the silver. Michael Rossi of the U.S., 18, was third with 111.37. China’s Jia Zongyang, world No.1, failed to reach the pedestal due to a poor result of 101.36.

For Maksim Gustik, 24, the result turned out to be the best in his career. His previous World Cup best was the second place at the World Cup stage in Kreischberg, Austria, on 17 February 2012.

Three more Belarusians took part in the World Cup freestyle aerials competition at Park City's Deer Valley Resort.

Alexei Grishin, the 2010 Vancouver Olympic champion, reached the last but one stage. The freestyler has just resumed his career after being sidelined due to the back injury. In the first stage he took the promising third place (124.34) but in the next two stages he was the sixth with 111.78 and 89.92 respectively, which did not leave his a chance to reach the superfinal.

The 2006 Turin and 1998 Nagano medalist Dmitry Dashchinsky appeared on the 11th overall place. In the qualifying stage he was 4th (121.24) and advanced to the best 12 round but failed to continue the competition.

Denis Osipov failed to succeed in the World Cup qualification stage. He came 13th with (110.22) out of 32 freestylers.

In the World Cup freestyle aerials competition ranking the best Belarusian freestyler is Dmitry Dashchinsky (4th place, 207 points). Maksim Gustik jumped from the 21st to the 6th place and has so far scored 156 points. Denis Osipov is 9th with 150 points. Other Belarusian representatives are Aleksei Grishin (14th, 108), Dmitry Glushakov (31st, 14) and Stanislav Gladchenko (34th, 13). The ranking includes 43 freestylers.

Along with first-placed Chinese sportsman Jia Zongyang (390 points), the top FIS Freestyle World Cup three includes Canada’s Travis Gerrits (223) and another Chinese representative Qi Guangpu (221).

The sixth Freestyle World Cup stage will take place in Sochi, Russia, on 17 February. The Visa FIS Freestyle World Cup consists of 7 stages. The last stage will take place in Bukovel, Ukraine, on 23 February.
