VANCOUVER, 18 February (BelTA) – Belarus lost their first game of the hockey tournament at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver on 17 February.
Belarus played Finland at Canada Hockey Place, home ground for the NHL’s Vancouver Canucks. The match was attended by 16, 000 spectators.
Belarus lost the game 1-5 (0-2, 1-1, 2-0).Sergei Kostitsyn was the only goal scorer for Belarus. Finland also outscored Belarus in terms of shots on goal (42-12).
Finland’s Olympic roster includes 18 NHL players against two in Belarus’ one. So, Belarusian team, led by Mikhail Zakharov, was playing cautiously. But only four shots on goal in the first two periods were not enough to beat one of the best NHL goaltenders Miikka Kiprusoff. In addition, Belarus conceded four of the five goals playing shorthanded.
Belarus play the next match of the Preliminary Group C of the Olympic hockey tournament against Sweden on 19 February.
