Belarus among initiators of UN resolution on WWII 70th anniversary

MINSK, 27 February (BelTA) - The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on 26 February to commemorate the upcoming 70th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. Belarus was one of the initiators of the resolution, BelTA learnt from the press service of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry.

Apart from Belarus, the resolution was co-initiated by Armenia, Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Tajikistan. Among the co-authors of the document are 82 states. According to the resolution, the UN General Assembly will hold a special meting to commemorate the victims.

Belarus’ Permanent Representative in the UN Andrei Dapkyunas stressed that for his country which happened to be in the heart of hostilities during the war grief and pain of losses are an inseparable part of the national memory. The Belarusian diplomat pointed out to the wisdom of state figures who felt up to overcome political and ideological disagreements and unite their countries against the Nazis 70 years ago.

Andrei Dapkyunas suggested considering the anniversary not as a regular date but as a unique opportunity to understand how the lessons of the war can help the world avoid tragic and irrecoverable errors in the future.

The Belarusian Permanent Representative in the UN also called upon the countries to think about the restoration of the sense of unity, cooperation spirit and responsibility for the common house.
