Belarus 50th among countries with high HDI

MINSK, 15 March (BelTA) – Norway, Australia, the United States, the Netherlands and Germany make up the top five countries with very high human development index (HDI), according to the Human Development Report 2013 “The Rise of the South: Human Progress in a Diverse World”, BelTA informs with reference to the UN news center.

The report was worked out by the UN Development Program and contains data on the national achievements of 187 countries in the standards of living and social security, health, education and cultural development, crime rate, environmental protection, people’s involvement in making decisions.

According to the document, Belarus, Russia and Kazakhstan are ranked 50th, 55th, and 69th respectively in the High Human Development grouping. This category also includes Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Armenia (72nd, 78th, 82nd and 87th correspondingly).

Turkmenistan is placed 102nd, almost at the top of the Medium Human Development grouping. The group also includes Moldova (113th), Uzbekistan (114th), Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan (share 125th position).

Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia are ranked 33rd, 41st and 44th respectively among very high HDI coutnries.

Niger, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mozambique, Chad and Burkina Faso have the lowest scores in the HDI’s measurement. The list of countries with the low human development index includes 44 countries.

The UNDP has been publishing its annual human development reports since 1990. The report is developed by a group of independent international experts that uses analytical and statistical data of various international intergovernmental organizations and other international agencies.

The 2013 report shows unprecedented gains in most countries of South. In particular, the report takes note of the economic growth in China and India, each having population over 1 billion. Over less than two decades, the two countries have doubled their per capita production output. Today India and China are in the medium HDI grouping.

According to the report, the United States remains the world’s largest economy. Experts believe that if the U.S. economic recovery is stuck, Europe will find it hard to overcome the current economic and social problems. According to them, it will cause far-reaching consequences for the developing world.
