Azarenka secures her third Miami Open title

Azarenka secures her third Miami Open title

MINSK, 2 April (BelTA) – Belarus number one Victoria Azarenka, currently ranked 5th in the world, scooped her third Miami Open title beating World No.19 Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia 6-3, 6-2 on Saturday, 2 April. The Belarusian now holds 20 WTA titles, BelTA has learned.

The match lasted for 78 minutes. Azarenka is now 5-4 lifetime against the Russian player.

It is Victoria Azarenka’s third victory this year. In January she won the competitions in Australia’s Brisbane. Two weeks ago she lifted the Indian Wells trophy after beating world number one Serena Williams in the final. The 26-year-old Belarusian lost only once in 23 match this season. The only bad luck was at the Australian Open quarterfinal in January 2016 where she lost to Germany’s Angelique Kerber 3-6, 5-7. In Miami the Belarusian took revenge against the No.3 seed German defeating her 6-2, 7-5 in the semifinal. Apart from her, the Belarusian proved too strong for World No.67 Monica Puig, 6-2, 6-4, in the second round, took a solid, 6-3, 6-0, victory over Polish world number 110 Magda Linette in the third, saw off No.4 seed Garbine Muguruza of Spain 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-4) to reach the quarterfinal where she beat World No.23 Johanna Konta of the UK 6-4, 6-2.

Victoria Azarenka won the Miami Open tournament in 2009 (beating Serena Williams in the final) and 2011 (defeating Russia’s Maria Sharapova).

Thanks to her success in Miami, Victoria Azarenka is back to the WTA top five. At the start of the current season the Belarusian tennis player collected more rating points than she did during the whole previous season.
