80 countries to partake in 2016 World Canoeing Junior Championships in Belarus

MINSK, 27 March (BelTA) - The World Canoeing Junior Championships which is due to take place in Belarus (Zaslavl, Minsk Oblast) in summer 2016 will gather nearly 2,000 athletes from 80 countries, Deputy Chairman, Executive Director of the Belarusian Canoe Association Sergei Shablyko told a press conference on 27 March.

“The championships will be held in two age categories – U18 and U23. We expect nearly 2,000 participants from at least 80 countries. 2016 will be an Olympic year. These competitions will be the main event for the youth,” Sergei Shablyko said.

The date of the championships will be announced later. Such forums are usually held in the first week of August. Because of the Olympic Games, the International Canoe Federation has addressed Belarus to bring them forward – on July. The date will be soon coordinated.

“At the meeting in Rio de Janeiro Board Members of the International Canoe Federation (ICF) awarded Belarus the right to host the World Canoeing Junior Championship. A relevant contract will be signed with the International Canoe Federation. It will specify the obligations of the parties in financing the expenditure, the date of the championship and plan of action to prepare for the event. Progress will be monitored by representatives of the International Canoe Federation,” Sergei Shablyko said.

One of the World Canoe/Kayak Cups that Belarus expects to hold in Zaslavl in 2015 can be a dress rehearsal before the World Canoeing Junior Championship. According to Sergei Shablyko, the status of these tournaments is comparable, but the World Championship will draw a much larger number of participants.
