Russia beats Finland 5:2 in 2014 IIHF WM final game

MINSK, 25 May (BelTA) – The Russian team beat the Finnish team 5:2 in the final game of the 2014 ice hockey world championship in Minsk on 25 May, BelTA has learned.

Russia vs Finland – 5:2 (1:1, 2:1, 2:0).

Minsk Arena. Attendance: 15,112.

Goals: 1:0 – Shirokov (10.45, Zaripov, PP goal), 1:1 – Pakarinen (19.57, Lehtera), 1:2 – Palola (26.51, Jormakka, Lehtera, PP goal), 2:2 – Ovechkin (27.34, Shipachyov), 3:2 – Malkin (35.36, Zaripov, PP goal), 4:2 – Zaripov (44.24, Shirokov, PP goal), 5:2 - Tikhonov (55.53, Kutuzov, Kulyomin, PP goal).

Shots: 39-26.

PIM: 12-28.

The decisive game of the 78th IIHF World Championship was a close-fought battle. The crowd that set an attendance record in Minsk witnessed a super intense clash in which the initiative was tilted from one side to another. The Russians took the lead on Sergei Shirokov’s powerplay goal. The Scandinavians tied the game with three seconds before the first intermission. Olli Palola took his team to the front early in the second period. The lead was short-lived, however, and Olli Palola’s goal turned to be the last for the Finnish team in the match. Oleg Znarok’s men evened the game less than a minute later and fired three more unanswered goals into Pekka Rinne’s net to clinch their tenth victory in Minsk.

Team Russia have claimed the world champion title for the fifth time. Finland have won their seventh silver of the world’s sporting forum.
