Deer rut in Belovezhskaya Pushcha

In Belarus, the red deer rutting season typically begins in mid-September. During this period, dominant stags (males) gather “harems” of 2 to 20 hinds (females) to mate. At other times, males live separately. Their roaring can be heard for about a month, a sound ranging from hoarse to deep bellows.
