Belarus’ first open aeronautics championship

Dozens of colorful air balloons soaring high in the clear skies above Minsk, a unique light show against the backdrop of evening lights, and even a cooking master class in the basket of an air balloon… All of those represented Belarus’ first open aeronautics championship. It was a magnificent gift for Minsk residents and visitors on the occasion of Minsk City Day. Teams from Belarus, Russia, Ukraine, Lithuania and other countries gathered for the competition. The teams had to tame the wind and follow the path of the judge’s air balloon and then deliver cargoes to the designated area with pinpoint accuracy. Over the course of three days the teams performed 3 sport flights and 15 missions. The winners were Giedrius Vaitulevicius (Lithuania), Vladimir Yashchurinsky (Ukraine), and Zydrunas Kazlauskas (Lithuania). Apart from the magnificent show of morning and evening flights of air balloons above the city the viewers were able to see a bike show, a pop concert, a knight tournament, horse riding, and the attempt to set the world’s record of high-altitude sushi cooking. In the final part of the championship the aeronauts arranged an unforgettable show Night Lights, with the huge domes of the air balloons lighting up to match popular tunes, with the lights reflected in the waters of the river.
