Digital payment system for Minsk urban transit services
Developed taking into account international experience, a new system to pay for passage will be introduced in all the kinds of surface urban transport in the Belarusian capital in 2014. Trams, trolleybuses, and buses in Minsk will be fitted with digital ticket-stamping machines and validators. Apart from paper tickets, which are valid for one trip, passengers will be able to buy contactless smart cards valid for 10 days, 15 days, and one month. An automated system to pay and control passage is in place in Minsk trams as of 1 February. By March 2014 digital devices will be installed in buses and trolleybuses. The system is designed to become fully operational in August 2014. By May 2014 when Minsk is supposed to host the world ice hockey championship the system will be operational as part of the present tariff policy. Soon digital seasonal tickets in Minsk will be able to carry data for up to six various tariff plans to allow passengers to travel by any means of mass transit, including metro.
