Zhores Alferov: The Belarusian economy needs scientific research projects

MINSK, 8 October (BelTA) – The Belarusian economy needs scientific research projects. The opinion was voiced by Zhores Alferov, a Nobel Prize winner in physics, Vice President of the Russian Academy of Sciences, a foreign member of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, an academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, during the opening ceremony of the international scientific conference Nanostructural Materials 2014: Belarus-Russia-Ukraine (NANO 2014), BelTA has learned.

According to Zhores Alferov, Belarus can boast a very good level of research in the area of nanomaterials. “Scientific research projects are needed by the Belarusian economy. They are adopted by the production sector albeit with difficulties,” said the Nobel Prize winner for physics. He also remarked that Russia very often boasts a good level of laboratory research yet the economy does not always need science.

In turn, Chief of Staff of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, academician Piotr Vityaz remarked that the conference will focus on theoretical approaches and research areas in other countries. Plans have been made to discuss practical results and possibilities for using them in the real sector of the economy for the sake of bolstering its competitive ability. “There are virtually no areas where nanotechnologies and nanomaterials are not used. It is their potential,” he stressed.

The 4th international scientific conference Nanostructural Materials 2014: Belarus-Russia-Ukraine (NANO 2014) is scheduled to take place in the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus on 7-10 October. The forum gathered over 350 top researchers of Belarus, Russia, and Ukraine. The scientists will present over 450 research papers.
