UNFPA praises Belarus’ achievements in combating domestic violence

MINSK, 24 September (BelTA) – Belarus has made huge achievements in combating domestic violence, UN/UNFPA Resident Representative in Belarus Sanaka Samarasinha said at the opening of the international conference “Development and institutionalization of mechanisms of interagency cooperation in combating domestic violence” on 24 September, BelTA has learned.

“Belarus has made big achievements in the adoption of legal acts aimed at combating domestic violence. Belarus is one of the leaders in the UNO in terms of combating domestic violence. Of course, there are no ideal states. And I am convinced that Belarus will make even more progress in eradicating his problem,” Sanaka Samarasinha said.

The organization will provide support and help to Belarus to step up work in this area. “This pertains to not only the passing of new laws. We are also ready to share breakthrough knowledge and experience in this field with your country,” he stressed.

The conference “Development and institutionalization of mechanisms of interagency cooperation in combating domestic violence” is held within the framework of international technical assistance projects to prevent domestic violence and ensure gender equality. The projects are sponsored by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the UN Trust Fund to End Violence against Women and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA).
