Svetlov: Belarusian diaspora can help promote national culture abroad

MINSK, 23 July (BelTA) - The Belarusian diaspora can expand presentation opportunities of the national culture abroad, Belarus’ Culture Minister Boris Svetlov said at the opening ceremony of the 6th Congress of the Belarusians of the World, BelTA has learnt.

"The diaspora can also help strengthen the image of the Belarusian state abroad, objectively inform the world community about the cultural development of the country, attract investment into the national culture, promote the interests of Belarus in the markets of other countries," the Minister said. According to him, supporting the activities of Belarusian public associations abroad, which are over 200 today, is viewed essential for the state policy.

Boris Svetlov noted that the Belarusian diaspora are an integral part of the Belarusian nation. “We will continue to work diligently with the diaspora, objectively inform them about what is happening at home, maintain effective contacts with representatives and organizations of Belarusians of the world,” the Minister added.

Work continues on the state program "Belarusians in the World". The draft law on the Belarusians abroad is ready for consideration by the National Assembly. "We can say that the program has been launched before its formal adoption, and there are no problems that cannot be solved without corresponding legislation. Work with Belarusians living abroad continues without interruption," said the Minister.

However, he called on Belarusians of the world to forge stronger partnership with local authorities and to develop forward-looking plans of interaction. "In order to develop targeted partnership the Ministry involves Belarusians living abroad, regional cultural institutions, but without feedback, they will not be able to work," the Minister said.

Boris Svetlov noted that one of the priorities of the Culture Ministry is the development of international partnerships and demonstration of national achievements abroad. "Efficient form of such work is the days of culture of Belarus in foreign countries and days of culture of other states in Belarus. This form of work is successful thanks, among other things, to the partnership with the Belarusian diaspora,” said the Minister.

More than 3.5 million ethnic Belarusians live abroad. According to the Minister, it is remarkable that they do not forget their roots, and are proud of who their ethnic background.

On 23-24 July Minsk is playing host to the 6th Congress of Belarusians of the World. The forum has brought together 254 delegates from 21 countries. Attending the Congress are representatives of the ministries of culture, education, economy and foreign affairs of Belarus, representatives of the Orthodox and Greek-Catholic churches.
