Svetlov: Awarding CIS base museum status to Nesvizh will acknowledge Belarus’ achievements

MINSK, 20 June (BelTA) – Awarding the status of the CIS base institution in museum affairs to the national historical and cultural museum-reserve Nesvizh will mean the recognition of the high level of museology in Belarus, Culture Minister of Belarus Boris Svetlov told BelTA ahead of the 28th meeting of the CIS Council for Cultural Cooperation.

“The decision to award the status will confirm that Nesvizh Castle is the CIS leading organization of the kind. It is the appreciation of Belarusian museum activities,” Boris Svetlov said.

The minister also took note of a high level of cultural cooperation between the CIS member states. “We will do our best to establish maximum contacts during the forum,” he added.

28th meeting of the CIS Council for Cultural CooperationNesvizh Castle is one of the most prominent historical and cultural specimens of Belarus. The palace was taken under the protection of the state in 1939. In 2001 the complex was handed to the national historical and cultural museum-reserve Nesvizh. In 2005 the castle was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The castle reopened in 2012 after a major makeover. According to the National Statistics Committee, Nesvizh Castle was named the most popular museum in Belarus last year with 431,000 visits.

On 20-21 June Minsk is playing host to the 28th meeting of the CIS Council for Cultural Cooperation. The agenda of the meeting comprises nearly 10 issues. The members of the council are expected to discuss the state cultural policy in Belarus, the status and prospects of cultural cooperation in the Commonwealth, draft provisions on giving the status of the basic organization to the CIS cultural and art establishments.

In particular, there are plans to give the status of the basic organization in cultural heritage to Armenia’s Mesrob Mashtots R&D Institute of Early Manuscripts Matenadaran and the status of the basic organization in museum affairs to the National History and Culture Museum Reserve Nesvizh (Belarus). The Gnesinykh Russian Academy of Music can become a basic organization in music and education, while the Gerasimov All-Russian State University of Cinematography in cinema and Tajikistan’s Aini State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater – in theater.

The meeting will consider the draft provision on the CIS international exhibition Art Expo, which has been developed by Armenia following the request of the CIS Council for Cultural Cooperation. CIS Council for Cultural Cooperation
