Serbia President: Belarus is an example for me

Serbia President: Belarus is an example for me

BELGRADE, 17 May (BelTA) – Belarus is an example to follow, said Serbia President Tomislav Nikolic as he met with Vice Premier of Belarus Piotr Prokopovich in Belgrade on 17 May, BelTA has learned.

“Pity it is not the year 2001. If it was, today we could definitely have a trade turnover between our countries in excess of $1 billion. Belarus would have a platform here to access Europe, we would have preserved our production sector. Belarus is an example for me and it should be an example for other people,” said Tomislav Nikolic.

The President remarked that Serbia used to have a production sector as strong as Belarus’. “But we went for privatization without thinking it through. Foreigners came, who privatized enterprises but didn’t want to get involved in production. They wanted to either grab shops, premises, land plots for construction purposes or they wanted to shut down factories to get our market because they already had factories of their own,” said Tomislav Nikolic. “Belarus should not repeat mistakes of Serbia”.

The Serbian leader believes that a new era began in Belarus-Serbia relations after his meeting with President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko during the official visit in March 2013. “These relations are absolutely sincere. Belarus can always count on our support for any project,” stressed Tomislav Nikolic.

He added that the Serbia government will take part in implementing the agreements reached during the visit of the Vice Premier of Belarus.
