Sardinia President views Belarus as bridge to markets of Russia, Eastern Europe

MINSK, 16 September (BelTA) – While on a visit to Sardinia Education Minister of Belarus Sergei Maskevich met with President Francesco Pigliaru to discuss the Belarusian-Sardinian education cooperation, BelTA has learned.

According to Sergei Maskevich, the relations with Sardinia have considerably expanded over the past years. Humanitarian recreation programs for Belarusian children have been joined by permanent cultural events, intensive contacts with the participation of official delegations, conferences, the exchange of students and youth groups, trade and economic activities.

According to Francesco Pigliaru, intensification of relations between Sardinia and Belarus opens a big potential for further development of the two countries. he stressed that he considers Belarus, taking into account its political and economic stability, as a bridge to the markets of Russia and Eastern Europe.

The key cooperation area that was discussed by representatives of Belarus and Sardinia was development projects of the two countries. “You have a big technopark and thousands of researchers. Our country also has prerequisites for the active development of the area. There are plans to unite private entrepreneurs in the industry,” the President said. He stressed the interest of the region in expanding the opportunities of the agro-industrial sector with the help of quality equipment.

The meeting also discussed training of tourism specialists, including the Erasmus program.

Sardinia is an autonomous region of Italy. The total population of Sardinia is about 1.7 million. One fourth of it lives in the capital Cagliari and its suburbs. Sardinia welcomes about 1.7 million tourists in summer.
