Russian MP: Troika summit in Minsk showed ability to find common ground

MOSCOW, 25 October (BelTA) – The session of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council on the level of heads of state that took place in Minsk on 24 October has demonstrated the ability of the participants to understand each other and find common ground, member of the State Duma of Russia Anatoly Lokot told BelTA.

“The Customs Union is gaining ground. The willingness of other countries to join the organization is a testimony to that,” the MP emphasized. He added that the countries seeking accession to the Customs Union see tremendous benefits in their membership. “This demonstrates that integration has been gaining momentum,” the MP said.

Anatoly Lokot believes that the Minsk summit allowed easing tensions with Ukraine. “However, Russian President Vladimir Putin clearly said that if Ukraine signs the association agreement with the EU, it will lose the trade concessions it now has with the Customs Union member states,” the MP reminded.

Anatoly Lokot welcomed the arrangement on the removal of barriers and restrictions in the mutual trade in the future Eurasian Economic Union.

“Belarus and Russia eliminated many restrictions in the bilateral trade while promoting the Union State that is a good example of an integration union. Other integration projects do not stand close to the Union State in terms of the integration level yet,” the Russian MP said.
