PACE President: European architecture incomplete without interaction with Belarus

STRASBOURG, 27 June (BelTA) – The European architecture would not be complete without the cooperation of the Council of Europe and Belarus, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe Jean-Claude Mignon said when speaking at a session of the Committee on Political Affairs and Democracy of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly (PACE), BelTA learned.

“With regard to how our relationship will develop, here we are talking about the special guest status for Belarus or a full-fledged membership in the Council of Europe. I would like us to move speedy on the common path and resume constructive dialogue,” Jean-Claude Mignon. He also noted that "it is in the interests of both Belarus and PACE".

In an interview to BelTA, Jean-Claude Mignon stated that "a dialogue with the Belarusian authorities is needed." He noted the importance of the fact that, in accordance with arrangements with the Belarusian authorities the Council of Europe organized the round table: “Religion and the death penalty" in Minsk, and the meeting of the Committee on Political Affairs and Democracy was briefed about the outcome of the round table. “The debate has been started, and thus our contacts have resumed," said the PACE President. He also welcomed the participation of the Belarusian MPs in the meeting of the Committee on Political Affairs and Democracy. In his view, it is very important that the participants were able to hear the opinion of the Belarusian side and ask questions.
