Myasnikovich: Belarus backs UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy

MINSK, 16 October (BelTA) – Belarus is interested in seeing the United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy implemented. Prime Minister of Belarus Mikhail Myasnikovich made the statement as he met with Jean-Paul Laborde, Executive Director of the Executive Directorate of the Counter-Terrorism Committee of the UN Security Council, on 16 October, BelTA has learned.

Mikhail Myasnikovich noted that the Belarus government had adopted a concept to fight terrorism. The Belarusian side pays close attention to advancing multilateral cooperation in fighting terrorism, including cooperation with the Counter-Terrorism Committee of the UN Security Council. This is why the visit of the Executive Director of the Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED) is so important for Belarus. “I think we will find new projects and contact points. We definitely need both technical aid and recommendations. We are open for dialogue,” noted the Prime Minister.

He stated that sophisticated forms of terrorism are manifested in various countries. “We have felt manifestations of this evil to a certain extent,” said Mikhail Myasnikovich referring to the terrorist attack in the Minsk metro in April 2011.

Jean-Paul Laborde offered his condolence to victims and relatives of those killed by the terrorist attack in Minsk. The Executive Director of the Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate underlined that terrorism is a problem for the entire world and no one is immune against this evil, therefore it is important for the global community to unite efforts in fighting terrorism.

The United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy was adopted in September 2006. The strategy is a unique global document meant to step up national, regional, and international efforts in fighting terrorism.
