MINSK, 13 November (BelTA) - Max Mirnyi is looking forward to the 2014 IIHF World Championship in Minsk. The famous Belarusian tennis player made this statement during an online conference at the press center of the Belarusian Telegraph Agency.
“I would like to see many guests here, I would like them to see our country and remarkable Minsk with their own eyes,” Max Mirnyi said. The player noted that his former teammate Daniel Nestor of Canada is a big hockey fan and he is going to come to Minsk. “I am glad that much has been done in Belarus in order to welcome guests from abroad and there is still enough time to finish preparations and host the event at the highest possible level,” Max Mirnyi underlined.
The Olympic champion also said that he dreams of organizing a tennis tournament of such a high level in Belarus. “However, things are more complicated when it comes to tennis. It was not easy even for Belarus, a country where hockey is so popular, to get the right to host the world ice hockey championship. To host a major tennis event will be even more difficult because professional tennis players are busy all the year round (a season in hockey is much shorter) and it will be extremely difficult for them to find a week in their schedule packed with various tournaments. Moreover, big money is needed to pay for membership in the International Tennis Federation. We also need the required infrastructure in order to be able to host tournaments of various stages but we still lack it,” Max Mirnyi noted. “Nevertheless, I hope that with the course of time we will get everything we need to hold high-level tennis competitions in Belarus,” the sportsman stressed.
