Makei: Demarcation will promote friendly ties between Belarus, Ukraine

GOMEL, 13 November (BelTA) – Border demarcation will help strengthen friendly relations between Belarus and Ukraine, Belarus’ Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei said at the ceremony to unveil the first border marker on the Belarus-Ukraine border in Dobrush District on 13 November, BelTA has learnt.

Attending the ceremony were the foreign ministers of Belarus and Ukraine, heads of the border committees, local authorities of the border areas and other officials. The foreign ministers solemnly cut the symbolic ribbon to unveil the border marker. The heads of the border committees attached the coats of arms to the border markers. A time capsule was laid.

Vladimir Makei emphasized the importance of the event. In his words, each state should have its symbols, like the coat of arms, flag, anthem and symbols of presidential power. “Our descendents should also inherit clearly-defined borders symbolizing peace and friendship,” the Belarusian Foreign Minister noted. The mounting of the first border marker is “another stone in the foundation of Belarus-Ukraine friendship”, Vladimir Makei said.

Belarus’ Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei and Foreign Minister of Ukraine Leonid KazharaForeign Minister of Ukraine Leonid Kazhara told reporters that the sovereignty of all states consists of two parts: territorial sovereignty and citizenship. “Ukraine and Belarus are established sovereign states,” he said. He emphasized that the border demarcation does not mean that the two countries split up. “I think that after the work is done, our nations will get even closer,” Leonid Kazhara said.
