Makei: CIS should remain a platform for fruitful economic cooperation

 MINSK, 24 October (BelTA) – The Commonwealth of Independent States should remain a platform for fruitful trade and economic cooperation, Belarus’ Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei said following the expanded participation session of the CIS Foreign Ministers Council in Minsk on 24 October, BelTA.

The Belarusian Foreign Minister noted that the CIS has viable development prospects. “Despite different priorities of individual countries in foreign policy and foreign economy, the CIS should remain a place for discussions and fruitful trade and economic cooperation,” he emphasized.

Vladimir Makei added that the expanded participation session of the Council was held in a constructive way and the decisions were adopted by the Foreign Ministers almost unanimously and unconditionally.

Chairman of the CIS Executive Committee - CIS Executive Secretary Sergei Lebedev noted that the session was well-prepared, therefore it proceeded smoothly. He noted that several matters discussed at the session had been initiated by Belarus. A day before some matters included into the agenda aroused a fierce debate; however, all the disagreements were removed thanks to the willingness of the participants to find a compromise. Thanks to that all the documents included into the agenda were adopted by the Foreign Ministers and will be forwarded to the CIS heads of state who are expected to sign them on 25 October.

Expanded participation session of the CIS Foreign Ministers Council in MinskSergei Lebedev informed that the next session of the CIS Foreign Ministers Council will be held in Moscow on 4 April as suggested by the Russian Federation.
