Makei: Belarus has built close ties with UNESCO

MINSK, 17 December (BelTA) – Belarus has established sustainable and strong relations with UNESCO, Belarus’ Foreign Minister, Chairman of the National Commission for UNESCO Vladimir Makei said on 17 December. Vladimir Makei took part in a solemn ceremony to award winners of the contest for the best videos about the 60th anniversary of Belarus’ membership in UNESCO, BelTA has learned.

Vladimir Makei noted that Belarus marked this important date by conducting a series of events. “The visit of UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova to Belarus in April 2014 vividly testifies to the high level of cooperation between Belarus and this international organization. Over the 60 years of being UNESCO member, Belarus has built sustainable and full-fledged relations with this organization across various fields, like education, science, youth policy, etc.”

The Foreign Minister reminded that the Belarusian Association of UNESCO Clubs has been operating in Belarus for 25 years already. The NGO implements the UNESCO youth policy in Belarus, promotes its principles and values. “The work of the association is very important and demanding, therefore we upheld the idea to conduct the contest of multimedia materials. The outcome of the contest suggests that our young people know about the activities of UNESCO,” he said.

“The work of the Belarusian Association of UNESCO Clubs has a positive impact and we will keep supporting it,” Vladimir Makei assured.

He noted that in 2015 Belarus will continue celebrating a number of important anniversaries associated with common values, like peace, humanism and mutual understanding between people and nations. Among these important dates are the 70th anniversary of UNESCO, the 70th anniversary of the United Nations and the 70th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War. Besides, the year 2015 was declared the Year of the Youth in Belarus. The Foreign Minister informed that Belarus has plans to hold various events on this occasion, including some events under the aegis of UNESCO. “We will try to materialize our plans, because this will benefit the image of our country,” Vladimir Makei said.

The contest of videos timed to the 60th anniversary of Belarus’ membership in UNESCO was conducted in three nominations, with 120 entries submitted. The winners represent all the regions of the country.
