Maira Mora praises Belarus’ efforts to protect European borders

BREST, 5 November (BelTA) – Belarus is doing a lot to maintain security of European borders, head of the EU Delegation in Belarus Maira Mora told reporters on 5 November, BelTA has learned.

“Belarus safely protects the border with the EU member states. Today I have been greatly impressed by the equipment of the checkpoints on the Belarusian border. I learned that many devices and facilities that are used to protect the Belarusian border are manufactured in Belarus. This is very good,” Maira Mora said.

The diplomat reminded that several programs with the total budget of over €4 million are implemented now to build up the capabilities of the Belarusian border service. Programs worth €15 million are run in the interests of the customs service. “Apart from that, over €57 million has been invested in these services since 2001,” she added.

She mentioned the international technical aid project SURCAP Phase II. In line with the project, about €2.2 million will be allocated to purchase the equipment and devices to protect the border in 2015-2016.

“New joint projects to enhance border security will be launched not earlier than 2015,” Maira Mora said.

The State Border Committee noted that Belarus has not been viewed by Europe as a source of illegal migration or other crimes for a long time already.

Heads of embassies of the EU states bordering on Belarus and representatives of the EU Office, the International Organization for Migration and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees were on a fact-finding visit to the Belarus-Poland border on 5 November.
