Maas: Belarus, Germany have great potential for boosting cooperation

VITEBSK, 24 October (BelTA) – Germany and Belarus have a huge cooperation potential, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Germany to Belarus Wolfram Maas told BelTA on 24 October.

“Cooperation opportunities are based among other things on Belarus’ geographic position. Minsk is 1,500 kilometers away from Berlin. It is not a long distance. Besides, Belarus borders on the EU. The two countries are not rich in natural resources. Successful development of our states is built upon the quality work of our people. In my opinion, personnel training is at a high level in your country. It is no doubt that we have considerable opportunities to intensify cooperation,” Wolfram Maas said.

The diplomat made a study trip to Vitebsk Oblast on 24 October, visiting one of the schools and the Marc Chagall Museum, meeting the local authorities.

Germany is among Vitebsk Oblast’ top five trading partners and is an absolute leader among the European countries. The bilateral trade hit the five-year record of $192.6 million in 2012. In January-August 2013 the trade between Vitebsk Oblast and Germany totaled $107.7 million. Exports made up $18.9 million, imports reached $88.8 million. Vitebsk Oblast posted trade deficit of $69.9 million. Vitebsk Oblast sells to Germany mainly the products of OAO Naftan and Polotsk Steklovolokno (about 75% of export supplies).
