Lukashenko: Production of medications in Belarus must be up to world standards

MINSK, 9 December (BelTA) – The production of medications in Belarus must be up to world standards. Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko set the task as he heard out a report from Healthcare Minister Vasily Zharko on 9 December, BelTA has learned.

The head of state reminded about plans to raise the share of Belarus-made medications on the domestic market up to at least 50% by late 2015. He stressed that the medications must be up to world standards. “We don’t need other kinds of medications. The production of medications in Belarus must be up to world standards”.

“We also have to think about exporting these medications. If their quality is inferior, they will sell neither in Russia, Ukraine, the Eurasian Economic Union, or the European Union. This is why we need at least 50% and of high quality,” stressed the President.

Alexander Lukashenko wondered about the state of affairs in this regard. “Many experts tell me that we may produce the medications but they will not be certified for compliance in some parameters. Is that so? We have to satisfy the domestic demand because we used to spend at least half a billion in hard currency on medications every year and maybe even more,” noted the head of state. “Therefore, we need import substitution. And we should export the medications. There is no other way. We will have to get the medications certified and sell them. What is the state of affairs in this regard?”
