Lukashenko: A lot is to be done for the EEU to become a strong economic union

MINSK, 7 June (BelTA) – Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko believes that a lot should be still done for the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) to become a strong economic union, The Belarusian leader made this statement while talking to the media in Kyiv following the inauguration ceremony of Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko on 7 June, BelTA has learned.

Alexander Lukashenko stressed that for now “it is a sheer economic union.” “We should do a lot to make it a strong economic union. With no politics, diplomacy, military relations,” the President noted.

“Signing this document we have taken a step back in some areas in respect to the Customs Union. We stepped back from the declaration. We wanted to set up an economic union with no exemptions and restrictions,” the Belarusian head of state noted.

“Many issues that should have been addressed by three, together, have been taken down to the bilateral level. It means we have failed to agree on something in three and had to revisit the issues at the bilateral level. It is not good,” the Belarusian leader added.

As for the equal membership, Alexander Lukashenko stressed that “if there is no equal membership, we, Belarusians, will not make part of any organization. I believe the same is true about Kazakhstan.”
