Kalinin: Belarus waives road toll for IIHF World Championship guests

GOMEL, 14 February (BelTA) – Guests of the world ice hockey championship will not have to pay road toll in Belarus, BelTA learned from Vice Premier Anatoly Kalinin on 14 February.

He said that Belarus will waive road toll for those, who arrive by car. Transit rules will not be changed.

The Vice Premier pointed out that the Year of Hospitality will depend a lot on the performance of the transport industry. “I am convinced that we will hold the championship commendably,” added Anatoly Kalinin.

Earlier BelTA quoted the Transport and Communications Ministry as suggesting that Belarus should waive fees for those, who buy tickets for the world ice hockey championship. The reason behind the suggestion: foreigners may have problems with paying the road toll since the system is still rather complicated.

The Transport and Communications Ministry, Belavtostrada (the owner of the digital road toll collection system BelToll), and the system’s operator are busy getting ready to operate the system during the world championship. More efforts will be poured into improving the awareness about the system. New customer service outlets are under consideration. “Hospitality is directly linked to the world championship. It is important for Belarus to demonstrate that we can host such events and are even ready to relax some rules so that visitors leave Belarus only with good impressions,” noted representatives of IOOO Kapsch Telematic Services.

BelToll is a digital system designed to collect road toll by using a specialized short-range radio technology, which allows collecting road toll from road users without their having to stop. The system went commercial in Belarus on 1 August 2013. At present the system covers 933km of Belarusian roads.

The company IOOO Kapsch Telematic Services is in charge of operating the BelToll system in Belarus.
