French expert: Nuclear safety is of paramount importance for Belarus

GOMEL, 16 September (BelTA) – Maintaining nuclear and radiation safety during the construction and operation of the Belarusian nuclear power plant is of paramount importance for Belarus, Director of the Nuclear Protection Evaluation Center (CEPN) of France Jacques Lochard told BelTA. He is taking part in the international training session at the National Radiology Institute in Gomel.

“Besides fundamental laws and regulations that underpin the nuclear safety today, your country needs to take into consideration the Chernobyl factor. Many Belarusian residents were affected by the Chernobyl disaster. They know what can happen if safety rules are ignored. I am convinced that the nation’s memory of these events has a huge impact on decisions of the people authorized to build a nuclear power plant in the country,” Jacques Lochard noted.

There is no doubt that everyone in Belarus understands the importance of nuclear safety, the expert noted. This is proved by the recent visit of the Department for Nuclear and Radiation Safety of the Belarusian Emergencies Ministry to Paris. During the visit a framework cooperation agreement in nuclear and radiation safety was signed with the Institute for Radiological Protection and Nuclear Safety of France. “I view it as another testimony to the determination of the Belarusian people to ensure maximum security while building and operating the NPP,” he said.

Belarus’ experience in radiological protection of people and reclamation of the contaminated land is very important for all countries promoting nuclear energy. “An enormous amount of work has been done; a great number of measures have been taken. At present the situation is totally under control. This also testifies to the ability of government agencies to address global issues,” Jacques Lochard said.
