FAO: Belarus’ role as food supplier is increasing

MINSK, 4 December (BelTA) - The Director General of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Jose Graziano da Silva praised the increasing importance of Belarus as a supplier of food on the world market and the country's role as a significant regional producer of grain crops. Mr Jose Graziano da Silva made the statement to this effect as he met with a Belarusian delegation headed by Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Lyudmila Nizhevich in Rome, BelTA learnt from the press service of the Foreign Ministry.

Mr Jose Graziano da Silva stressed that FAO puts special hopes on the potential of Belarus as a strong manufacturer of agricultural equipment, including small tools and equipment which are in demand among farmers of developing countries.

"The Director General welcomed the intention stated by the head of the Belarusian delegation to develop a country cooperation program jointly with the FAO Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia. This document will be used as a guide for cooperation with Belarus as a technical assistance recipient, and, at the same time, a potential partner in assisting the development of the southern hemisphere, especially Latin America,” the Foreign Ministry said.

The meeting between the Belarusian delegation with Ms Fernanda Guerrieri, Assistant Director General and Regional Representative for Europe and Central Asia, focused on technical cooperation between Belarus and FAO in terms of the legal framework, and also in terms of specific projects in food security, management of obsolete pesticides, standardization, development of legislation in agriculture and agricultural exports. Issues of expansion of Belarus’ presence on the staff of FAO and its regional office in Budapest were also discussed.

Special attention was paid to the development of farms and smallholdings in anticipation of the International Year of Family Farms in 2014.

The 145th session of the FAO Council is held in Rome on 3-7 December. Attending the event is the Belarusian delegation. On 4 December, Belarus’ representatives will meet with senior officials of the International Fund for Agricultural Development.
