Drozdovskaya: Opening of the yachting center in Belarus will help promote this sport among the youth

Drozdovskaya: Opening of the yachting center in Belarus will help promote this sport among the youth

MINSK, 15 April (BelTA) – Leader of the Belarusian national yachting team Tatiana Drozdovskaya, who currently tops the ISAF Laser Radial rankings, has welcomed the creation of the Belarusian yachting club with modern sports school for children and young people that will be opened in 2013. Tatiana Drozdovskaya made this statement following an award ceremony at the National Olympic Committee on 15 April, BelTA has learnt.

“I am very glad that the new center and the school will soon be opened. I hope that this will be an impetus for many children to take up yachting sport. When I took up this sport the infrastructure was far from ideal, and there has been no significant improvement so far. Now seeing the modern yachting center equipped with shower cabins and dressing rooms parents will be more willing to send their children to train here. I welcome the opening of the new yacht club and hope that new champions will be growing here in good conditions. I cannot wait to see other Belarusians winning medals at major competitions. Earlier we had a great team in which the 1970s-born guys became very good friends and supported each other every time. I would like the new generation to enjoy the same solidarity,” Tatiana Drozdovskaya underscored.

Tatiana Drozdovskaya told the media that there was not easy to make first steps on the international arena after several years of domestic training. Before she took part in the first international sea event she had not had any experience of competing on the sea water. Tatiana Drozdovskaya said it took quite a time to get used to handling the yacht under the sail in such conditions.

Tatiana Drozdovskaya is the only Belarusian partaking in the yachting World Cup. Another Belarusian hot prospect Nikolai Zhukovets will soon try his luck in international events in the RS:X class, noted Tatiana Drozdovskaya. “Young sportsmen do not have enough skills to participate in World Cups. Since May they may begin competing in the Europe Cups. So Belarus will be represented by quite a big team. Pavel Finayev and Maksim Belkevich will partake in the 470 class event, Ivan Vintukhovsky will represent Belarus in the Laser class while and Diana Telezhnikova and Irina Chaiko in the Laser Radial event,” Tatiana Drozdovskaya underlined.

Tatiana Drozdovskaya also announced her next competition that will be the yachting World Cup in France’s Hyeres on 20 April. “The waters there are difficult to compete on. The competitions are held in the same place every time. In 2010 I came third but back then the weather was stormy. I do not know the weather forecast this year. Sometimes it can be just a bit breezy there. The route, however, is very well-known,” Tatiana Drozdovskaya added.

Tatiana Drozdovskaya has topped the ISAF Laser Radial rankings for the first time in the history of the national yachting sport. In the updated 8 April ranking issued by the ISAF the Belarusian held 878 points. Tatiana Drozdovskaya is a many-time world champion, World Cup winner, finalists of the World and European championships. In 2000 she was awarded the status of the international master of sports. In 2007 she secured the world champion title. Tatiana Drozdovskaya represented Belarus in four Olympics in 2000, 2004, 2008 and 2012. She was 23rd at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and 15th at the 2012 London Games.
