Berdimuhamedov: CIS potential can help keep balance in the region

MINSK, 10 October (BelTA) – The CIS potential can be used to preserve balance in the region, President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said at the session of the CIS Heads of State Council in Minsk on 10 October, BelTA has learned.

The President of Turkmenistan emphasized that one should not turn the blind eye on the current events, including in the CIS space. Considered and responsible approaches relying on traditions which are used in the CIS to resolve all complicated issues are needed. These traditions are based on the respectful dialogue between partners. “It is essential to keep a positive focus of the activities of the Commonwealth of Independent States which always relied on the principles of equality, mutual respect, good-neighborliness and good will of all participants,” Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said. The CIS potential can and must be used to keep the balance of regional security and to avoid conflicts, he is convinced.

In his speech at the session of the CIS Heads of State Council President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev also stressed that the Commonwealth has not depleted its potential as a platform for cooperation, interaction and discussion of topical issues on the regional and international agenda.

Uzbekistan President Islam Karimov agreed with the opinion of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko that it is time to have a frank discussion of the fate of the CIS. “The importance of the CIS is obvious for us. The Commonwealth is the organization that gives vast opportunities to maintain direct international dialogue, discuss urgent issues, solve disputes and disagreements between member states taking into account the existing solid legal framework, available tools and mechanisms of cooperation,” Islam Karimov said.
