Belarus urges UN to give more active support to development efforts of member states

MINSK, 8 October (BelTA) - Belarus calls for more active support on the part of the operational agencies of the United Nations development system towards the efforts of the member countries in the field of development, Belarusian Deputy Foreign Minister Valentin Rybakov said when speaking at the general debate of the Economic and Financial Committee (Second Committee) of the General Assembly of the United Nations, BelTA learned from the press service of the Foreign Ministry of Belarus.

In that connection, it was suggested to consider the establishment of an intergovernmental agency on financing the development to coordinate decisions on financial matters of the future agenda for development.

Valentin Rybakov raised a number of issues, including the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the development of the post-2015 agenda. He stressed the role of middle-income countries, which account for more than 70% of the poor population and which need new coherent and strengthened mechanisms of cooperation for the achievement of the MDGs and sustainable development goals.

Valentine Rybakov also pointed to the need to ensure that energy, which plays a key role in the development, and advanced environmental technologies should be made more accessible.
