Belarus seeks to bolster economic ties with Cyprus

MINSK, 11 November (BelTA) – Belarus seeks to step up the economic cooperation with Cyprus, Deputy Chairman of the Belarusian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) Vladimir Ulakhovich told journalists before the opening ceremony of the Belarus-Cyprus business forum on 11 November, BelTA has learned.

“The forum has been organized on the initiative of the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry that wants to present its potential to the Belarusian enterprises. We would like to step up the bilateral cooperation. The legal framework has already been developed, and now we should actively use it and work on its improvement,” Vladimir Ulakhovich noted.

He believes that the Belarus-Cyprus business forum should be viewed as one element in the chain of Belarus’ contacts with other countries. “Even if we look just at the last two months, we can see a lot of events: the investment forum in New York, the presentation of the Belarusian economy in Paris, and the economic forum at the Stadler enterprise in Switzerland. This week Belarus will partake in another two similar events: the Belarus-UK investment forum in London and the Austria-Belarus-Russia forum in Vienna,” Vladimir Ulakhovich said. He believes that the interest of the international community in Belarus as a stable and reliable partner has been growing. “Thanks to the pragmatic position that Belarus always adheres to, other countries start to notice our country, show respect and great interest,” he emphasized.

As for the relations between Belarus and Cyprus, Vladimir Ulakhovich noted that Cyprus is a country providing legal, business, and financial services. “Cyprus realizes the need to restore its cooperation with Belarus as other countries are moving forward and some large-scale investment projects are already in the pipeline,” he noted.

Vladimir Ulakhovich said that the volume of trade between Belarus and Cyprus is not big. He noted that some time ago Cyprus imported a significant amount of Belarusian oil products, but the supplies have recently been minimized. However, Vladimir Ulakhovich believes that the cooperation in this field will soon be restored.

“We have developed a good basis for the investment cooperation with Cyprus. Last year this country invested €217 million in Belarus on net basis. This is another very important area we should work on,” Vladimir Ulakhovich noted.
