Belarus ready to host major international biathlon competitions

Belarus ready to host major international biathlon competitions

MINSK, 2 March (BelTA) - Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said he would like Belarus to host a major international biathlon event. He made this statement when talking to journalists at the Minsk Ski Track 2013 winter sports festival.

According to him, Belarus is now able to host any type of sports events, apart from Olympic Games because it is connected with big additional expenses and the need to build new sports facilities and hotels. “But if such a decision was taken well in advance, then I am sure we would cope well. If we needed any additional help, the Russians would help us in terms of sports facilities and venues. We could host the Olympics but we would need five to seven years to prepare for such a responsible event. We are ready to host any other competitions, if we have one or two years to prepare,” Alexander Lukashenko said.

The head of state admitted that first of all he would like Belarus to host a major international competition in biathlon. “I recently reviewed the concept of upgrade of Belarus’ main winter sports center Raubichy. After two or three years, it will be unrecognizable. It will be like Minsk Arena, a modern center corresponding to the highest standards," said the President.

Therefore, Belarus is ready to host a biathlon world cup, European championships, or world championships if there is willingness on the part of the international biathlon authority.

“We will be ready to host cross-country skiing and biathlon competitions,” added the head of state.
