Belarus meets MDGs early

MINSK, 2 July (BelTA) – Belarus has met the Millennium Development Goals ahead of time, Deputy Minister of Labor and Social Security of Belarus Alexander Rumak said in his remarks at the conference that took place in Geneva on 1-2 July. The event entitled “Enabling Choices: Population Priorities for the 21st Century” was organized by the UNECE in cooperation with the United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA), BelTA learnt from the press service of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry.

At this high-level plenary meeting Alexander Rumak presented the information on Belarus’ progress in the implementation of the action plan to the Cairo international conference on population and development as well as the main priorities of the country’s social policy regarding demographic security, reproductive health, and encouragement of women’s rights.

“The Deputy Minister of Labor and Social Security took note of Belarus’ early achievement of the Millennium Development Goals related to eradication of extreme poverty and hunger, reduction of maternity and child mortality, progress in promotion of gender equality,” the Foreign Ministry said.

Assessing the results of the implementation of the action plan of the Cairo international conference, the Belarusian delegation suggested regional cooperation in elaborating the ways for sharing experience, applying the best practices in the implementation of international technical aid projects.

Alexander Rumak also met with UNFPA Executive Director for Eastern Europe and Central Asia Werner Haug.
