Belarus focuses on CIS promotion during its CIS presidency

MINSK, 22 October (BelTA) – During its CIS presidency Belarus focuses on promoting the major development goals of the Commonwealth of Independent States, Belarus’ permanent plenipotentiary to the CIS bodies Vasily Pugachev told a press conference hosted by BelTA on 22 October.

“The objectives of Belarus’ chairmanship in the CIS are based on the major development goals of the Commonwealth. These objectives are designed to give an additional impetus to cooperation in certain areas. In fact this impetus has been given,” Vasily Pugachev said. In fact, a cooperation agreement in environmental protection was adopted; an international exhibition and conference “Man. Ecology. Ecoproduction & Technology” was held; the 11th nationwide environmental forum and international roundtable session were organized at the National Academy of Sciences to discuss the use of green technologies and renewable energy sources. Dozens of similar events were held in many countries of the CIS.

Vasily Pugachev told the press conference about some specific proposals in the innovative field voiced by the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. Among them is the suggestion to use biotechnologies complying with the fifth and sixth technological paradigms in poultry production and cattle breeding; solutions associated with the construction of green small-scale power generation facilities using renewable energy sources and local resources; a suggestion to start producing energy-efficient import-substituting LED devices and systems and organic light-emitting diodes. The cooperation concept in the field of renewable energy sources and the action plan to implement it were included in the agenda of the regular session of the CIS Council of Heads of Government that is set to be held in Saint Petersburg on 20 November.

Vasily Pugachev reminded that the session of the supreme charter body of the CIS – the Council of Heads of State – will be held in Minsk on 25 October. This will be the 41st session of the CIS Council of Heads of State. Belarus will play host to the session for the 10th time. The heads of the participating delegations are to discuss 17 draft documents, including documents related to the forthcoming 70th anniversary of the Victory of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945, the declaration of the year 2015 the Year of the Veterans of the Great Patriotic War, the draft decision on common anniversary medals instituted for the 70th anniversary of the Victory of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War.

The summiteers plan to discuss the interstate draft program on joint action against crimes for 2014-2018, CIS cooperation program against terrorism, illegal trade in narcotic drugs and human trafficking for 2014-2018, other multilateral interstate targeted programs. The participants of the session will also discuss the CIS cooperation concept to combat IT crimes and the draft agreement on the establishment of the Interstate Anti-Corruption Council. They will also discuss chairmanship and co-chairmanship in the CIS in 2014.
