MINSK, 30 May (BelTA) – The Neglyubka textile traditions will be added to the State List of Historical and Cultural Heritage of Belarus. The decision to assign such status was taken by the Belarusian National Scientific Methodical Council on Protection of Historical and Cultural Heritage, BelTA learned from the Belarusian Culture Ministry.

Textile traditions of the village Neglyubka, Vetka District, are recognized as unique Belarusian folk art. For almost half a century the famous Neglyubka towels have been the hallmark of Belarus.

The richness and diversity of weaving and embroidery techniques, intricate polychromy (up to 25 colors and shades in one product), numerous ornamental patterns are their distinctive features. Neglyubka rushniks (towels) are made in white and red colors. Products are characterized by richness of ornamentation: craftswomen use multiple dozens of complex geometric and plant ornaments.

Other products of local artisans include multi-color tablecloths, bedspreads, curtains and other interior decorations. Neglyubka outfit is one of the most archaic and complex outfits of the Belarusian folk costume. A rich arsenal of techniques of weaving and embroidery, ornaments can be used to create modern items: towels, tablecloths, clothing items, souvenir products.

The textile traditions in the village Neglyubka have developed in the socio-cultural conditions prevailing after the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. In the last decade the educational institutions have stepped up efforts to revitalize and support cultural arts and crafts. The tradition is maintained by residents of the older generation who pass the skill on to younger generations. Modern artisans teach the Neglyubka weaving tradition in the hobby groups organized set up at the Neglyubka village weaving center, the Neglyubka secondary school, and Vetka children’s and youth art center.

Many local traditions are associated with the use of textile items. For example, towels, tablecloths, banners are donated to decorate the local church. There is a special tradition to consecrate the water in one of the wells which is decorated with bright towels and spreads. Woven and embroidered towels are put on crosses near rural wells.
