The 31st Summer Olympic Games opened with an official ceremony at the legendary Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro on 6 August. Brazil has become the first state in South America to host the Olympics. This year the Games will include 306 medal events, which is a new record. Over 10,000 athletes, including 124 Belarusians, will compete for medals in Brazil.

A spectacular show to celebrate Brazil's history and future, and highlight the topic of global warming was presented at the country’s biggest arena by Oscar nominee for The City of God Fernando Meirelles. The main heroes of the ceremony were prominent Brazilians: singer and musician Paulinho da Viola, who performed the national hymn to the accompaniment of an acoustic guitar, and top model Gisele Bundchen, who opened the Games with her 150m runway walk. Brazilian long-distance runner and 2004 bronze medalist Vanderlei de Lima lit the Olympic flame.

The most exciting part of the opening ceremony was, traditionally, the Parade of Nations which featured delegations from 206 countries and an absolutely unique team – Refugee Olympic Team that walked behind the Olympic flag. Famous cyclist Vasily Kiriyenko, the world champion and winner of the European Games in Baku, was the flag bearer of Team Belarus at Rio 2016. At the Parade Of Nations Belarus’ national team featured representatives of 10 sports. Among them were famous Olympic champions Max Mirnyi (tennis) and Sergei Martynov (rifle shooting).
