New Great Patriotic War Museum opens in Minsk
2 Jul 2014

The Great Patriotic War Museum in Minsk was officially opened on 2 July, in the run-up to the Independence Day of Belarus. It was in the Belarusian capital that the Soviet Union’s first war museum opened back in 1944. The new building constructed next to the Minsk Hero City Stele near the Victory Park, where Belarus holds military parades and festive rallies, has already become one of the most symbolic places of Minsk. Eleven sparkling "rays" made of stainless steel on the facade of the museum symbolize the Victory salute and 1100 tragic days of the Nazi occupation of Belarus.

In the year of the 70th anniversary of liberation of Belarus from the Nazi invaders the renovated museum was inaugurated by Presidents of Belarus and Russia Alexander Lukashenko and Vladimir Putin.
