558 parliamentary candidates registered in Belarus

MINSK, 18 October (BelTA) – Some 558 people will be able to stand for election to the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus, Chairperson of the Central Election Commission (CEC) Lidia Yermoshina told reporters on 18 October, BelTA has learned.

Five candidates are running for one seat on average. The House of Representatives is elected through a majoritarian system in 110 single-mandate districts.

A reminder, 703 people were nominated to run for election. 

The international conference Institute of Elections as the Mechanism of Public Authority Legitimation is taking place in Minsk on 17-18 October with the participation of experts in election law. The event highlights issues of constitution-making and observation of election campaigns.

The plenary session on 18 October is dedicated to the elections to the Belarusian parliament, the election legislation and the practice of electoral campaigns in the country.

The event is organized by the CIS Executive Committee, the CIS Inter-Parliamentary Assembly, and the Central Election Commission of Belarus.

The elections to the Council of the Republic are scheduled for 7 November, while the elections to the House of Representatives are slated for 17 November.
