Belarus parliament elections

12 Aug 2016

521 candidates registered to run in Belarus’ parliamentary elections

MINSK, 12 August (BelTA) – A total of 521 candidates have been registered to take part in the elections to the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus, Chairperson of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Belarus Lidia Yermoshina told BelTA.

“521 candidates have been registered to run for seats in the Belarusian parliament. 93 candidates were denied registration, with 16 more withdrawing from the race,” the CEC head said. Lidia Yermoshina gave a positive account of the number of the registered candidates, pointing to a low percentage of people denied registration. “14.8% of potential candidates were refused registration, which is 10% less than four years ago. Just to compare: 363 candidates were registered at the previous parliamentary elections. 122 people, or 24.7%, were denied registration,” said Lidia Yermoshina.

This year a total of 630 people were nominated to stand as candidates for the Belarusian parliament, 130 up from the 2012 elections. An estimated 765 sets of documents were submitted to election commissions.

The elections to the House of Representatives will take place on 11 September. Candidates will compete for 110 parliamentary seats.
