Belarus Parliamentary Elections 2012

23 Sep 2012

Election campaigning prohibited on polling day

MINSK, 23 September (BelTA) – Any campaigning is prohibited on 23 September, the key parliamentary election day in Belarus, Secretary of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Belarus Nikolai Lozovik told BelTA.

The election legislation bans political agitation and any appeals to boycott the elections on the main ballot day in the country. The district commission or the Central Election Commission issues a warning to the candidates, their proxies or initiative groups that fail to observe this requirement. In case of repetition, the candidates lose their status.

Nikolai Lozovik noted that on the polling day it is difficult to make sure that all the constituencies keep to the law that prohibits campaigning on the key day. “A person who is seeking a place in the legislative body should set the example of a law-abiding citizen and should not violate the rules of the election campaign in the country,” the CEC Secretary stressed.
