CIS mission: Belarus’ parliamentary elections meet international standards

MINSK, 24 September (BelTA) – The parliamentary elections in Belarus meet the universally acknowledged standards, Chairman of the CIS Executive Committee - CIS Executive Secretary, chief of the CIS observation mission in Belarus Sergei Lebedev told reporters commenting on the Belarusian parliamentary elections, BelTA has learnt.

“The mission has found that the election campaign in Belarus was held in a calm environment. The authorities and election commissions of all levels made sure Belarusian citizens had an opportunity to exercise their electoral rights. The CIS observation mission arrived at the following conclusions: the elections on 23 September 2012 were held in compliance with the Constitution and the Electoral Code of the Republic of Belarus, the elections met internationally recognized democratic standards, they were transparent and open and ensured free expression of the will of Belarusian citizens,” Sergei Lebedev said.

“Representatives of the CIS mission monitored the vote counting procedure and noted that the procedure was conducted in an open way. The observers were provided with a real opportunity to see how the procedure was conducted,” the chief of the mission said.

Sergei Lebedev noted that “some individual flaws that were revealed could not affect the voting results, because there were very few of them and those were mostly technicalities”.
