WHO Director General invited to visit Belarus in October 2015

MINSK, 22 July (BelTA) – WHO Director General Dr Margaret Chan was conveyed an invitation on behalf of Prime Minister Andrei Kobyakov to visit Belarus in October 2015 to attend the WHO European Ministerial Conference. The invitation was handed over by Health Minister Vasily Zharko during the international medical conference in Ashgabat, BelTA learned from the press service of the Health Ministry.

The WHO European Ministerial Conference on the Life-course Approach in the Context of Health 2020, with the participation of health ministers from 53 countries, will be held in Minsk on 21-22 October. Staging this big event is a testament to the high assessment of Belarus’ healthcare system by the WHO. Representatives of international agencies and organizations, including UNICEF, UNAIDS, UNDP, IARC have been also invited to attend the event.

When in Ashgabat, Vasily Zharko held working meetings with the Health Ministers of Lithuania, Latvia, Kyrgyzstan, Afghanistan and Turkmenistan. The parties discussed topical issues of bilateral cooperation. In addition, the minister made a report on the work to improve the health of the population: the national achievements over the past 20 years and prospects for the future.

The medical forum in Ashgabat was dedicated to the discussion of such important topics as the efforts to improve the health of the population (national achievements over the past 20 years and prospects for the future); results in achieving the Millennium Development Goals; progress in the prevention and control of non-contagious diseases (the example of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control); foreign policy and neutrality: serving the interests of health; intersectoral action for health within the framework of the regional strategy "Health 2020" and the national work.
