Spanish ambassador commended by Belarus’ foreign ministry

MINSK, 14 January (BelTA) – Former state secretary of the Spanish foreign ministry, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Spain to Russia with concurrent accreditation to Belarus Ignacio Ibanez Rubio has been commended by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus, BelTA learned from the Belarusian Embassy in Spain.

On 11 January the Belarusian Embassy in Spain hosted an event timed to the 100th anniversary of the Belarusian diplomatic service.

Taking part in the event were ambassadors of foreign states, members of the Spanish foreign ministry, government officials, business people as well as representatives of the Belarusian diaspora in Spain. “A letter of commendation of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs was awarded to former state secretary of the Spanish foreign ministry, Ambassador of Spain to Russia with concurrent accreditation to Belarus Ignacio Ibanez Rubio for his contribution to promoting bilateral cooperation. The Belarusian embassy also commended representatives of the Spanish business community, culture and the Belarusian diaspora in Spain for facilitating cooperation between Belarus and Spain,” the embassy informed.

Speaking about Belarus-Spain relations, Belarus’ Ambassador to France with concurrent accreditation to Spain Pavel Latushko emphasized that “today Belarus and Spain are opening new pages in bilateral cooperation: the two European states have everything in place to maintain friendly relations for centuries to come”.

On the same day Pavel Latushko met with State Secretary for Foreign Affairs of the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation Fernando Valenzuela. The parties reviewed bilateral cooperation in recent years and noted that among its most important outcomes are establishment of the Belarusian Embassy in Spain, development of a foreign policy dialogue, regular consultations between the foreign ministries of Belarus and Spain, as well as establishment of the Belarus-Spain intergovernmental commission for economic and industrial cooperation.

Pavel Latushko and Fernando Valenzuela welcomed a sustainable growth in bilateral trade and outlined new areas of cooperation. Among them is arranging a visit of a Spanish ministerial delegation to Belarus in 2019 and opening Belarus’ honorary consulates in Malaga and Tenerife.
