Some 10,500 domestic observers accredited for municipal elections in Belarus

MINSK, 23 January (BelTA) – The election commissions have accredited 10,500 domestic observers for the elections of the 28th convocation municipal councils of deputies, BelTA learned from Chairwoman of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Belarus Lidia Yermoshina on 23 January.

The Belarusian national youth union BRSM, the public association Belaya Rus, and the Belarusian Public Association of Veterans have the largest numbers of accredited observers. Foreign diplomats, who work in Belarus, also show an interest in the municipal elections. They are permitted to perform short-term observation and observe vote counting. The Central Election Commission has already accredited 24 foreign diplomats, who work for the embassies of Russia, the USA, France, and the UK.

Long-term international missions usually work in Belarus during presidential elections and parliamentary elections. However, following the established tradition foreign diplomats, who are accredited in the Republic of Belarus, are allowed to perform short-term observation during municipal elections. As many as 50 accreditation papers were issued in 2010 and 15 ones in 2014.

The municipal elections are scheduled to take place in Belarus on 18 February. Early voting will be available on 13-17 February. Over 22,200 candidates for seats on municipal councils of deputies have been registered.
